AUDIENCE and OpenAUDIENCE

The projects AUDIENCE and OpenAUDIENCE produced as output the AUDIENCE system for spatial audio and auralization, the current main continuing product of NEAC. There are two versions of the software: a full and restricted (AUDIENCE4Pd) and a public and free OpenAUDIENCE (OA).

The current system version is v.2.0.3 (OA 1.0.3). It is expected to include the OA library in future distributions of Pd Extended. A new project towards the generation of AUDIENCE 3.0 is in planning. Ongoing projects addressing specific developments include a Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) codec and an acoustic simulator.

Those interested in Scientific Initiation or Post-Graduation programs with the group please get in
touch. There are opportunities for new works in Reactive Music, Spatial Instruments, Musical Reconfigurability, Audio Coding, Sound Mixing and Production Systems, Multichannel Systems, Multichannel Recording, and many others.

Ongoing Research and Development Projects:

Description: Collaborative development initiative, open to researchers worldwide

Objectives: Continuous development of the free distribution of the AUDIENCE auralization software for Pd; updating and development of new functions for multichannel and spatial audio processing

Partnership: USP Research Centers

Financing: USP (University of São Paulo); CNPq (indirectly through individual scholarships)

Results: Update of OA versions

Status: ongoing

Concluded Research Projects:

  •  MÓBILE – Interactive Musical Processes (focus: R&D in musical acoustics, auralization and psychoacoustics)

Description: Multidisciplinary research project aimed at investigating interactivity in music and the development of systems for creation, performance, musical acoustics and auralization.

Objective: Research and development in 4 integrated sub-areas: (1) sonology (reflections on issues, processes and problems involving musical interaction), (2) interactive systems (systems creation and performance), (3) artistic production with interactive systems and (4) musical acoustics, psychoacoustics and auralization (auralization systems with WFS, tools for acoustic simulation and process optimization). Area 4 main goal: developing a solution for auralization for Wave Field Synthesis integrating the platforms AUDIENCE and AcMus delivering the technologies to the group.

Partnership: Music Dept. ECA/USP, IME-USP Computer Music Group

Benefits: Software development (encoding and decoding modules for the AUDIENCE system). Artistic production mediated by musical interactive media and processes.

Sponsorship: FAPESP Projeto Temático, proc. nº 2008/08632-8.

Status: Concluded (period: 01/03/2009 through 31/08/2013)

  • OpenAUDIENCE I (focus: R&D of a free software for audio immersion) (2006-2010)

Description: Collaborative development project, open to researchers, hosted originally at Incubadora FAPESP (portal deactivated by FAPESP).

Objectives: Development of a free (public) AUDIENCE auralization program package; Articulation of a collaborator network;

Partnership: Coding Technologies (later Dolby); Koolu (Canada);

Financing: USP; support for trainees provided by AES Brazil;

Results: Updating of versions 2.x of the base program and versions 1.x of the free program; Updating and development of new functions for multichannel audio processing;

Status: Concluded. Stable and deployed distribution.

  • AUDIENCE (focus: R&D of sound immersion system for virtual reality) (2003-2005)

Description: Project for the development of a system (hardware & software) for 2D/3D auralization for immersive virtual reality environments.

Objective: Validation of the AUDIENCE processing architecture; Construction of a 2D/3D auralization system for a CAVE.

Partnership: Lando HiFi; Sankya Eletrônica; Cabos Golden; Coding Technologies (later Dolby).

Financing: USP; industrial partners;

Resultados: Auralization system (hardware & software) for CAVEs.

Status: Concluded. Validated system.

  • WAVESYNT (focus: a MATLAB library for multiresolution analysis with wavelets) (1997, 2005)

Description: Library of functions for MATLAB for analysis/resynthesis of sound signals in multiresolution using Wavelets. Developed as a result of work of master's degree in electronics engineering at the Polytechnic School of USP. See more details and download the library and sound material in the link.

Status: Concluded. Last update in 2005.
