Areas of expertise

NEAC is active in research and development of new technologies for audio and music, running projects aimed both to the design of software, circuits and systems, as for artistic production mediated by technology, by supporting creation activities, processing, production, transmition and reproduction of sound.

Our interests address mainly the new methodologies and techniques for sound creation, sound scene encoding and audition. Projects on these tracks can focus on collaborative and interactive creation, on computer-aided production of sound and emotion-oriented modeling, on the development of controllers and interfaces, and techniques for reactive listening, music reconfigurability and sound immersion. Other areas of interest that have a particular impact in society are the sound technologies for application in medicine, ecology and biology.

The center can act together with academic and on-demand contracted projects commissioned by public and private sectors.

Research Lines

NEAC has been active in the following research areas:

  • Audio systems architecture (design e customization of audio processing systems)
  • Spatial audio (modeling and realization of sound spaces)
  • Sound coding (scene-oriented coding and multichannel mixing)
  • Computer music (analysis, synthesis, interactive music processing, real time processing)
  • Digital Music (authoring and reproduction formats and systems, modeling of collaboration and reactivity in creation and audition)
  • Interactive music systems (spatial music instruments, augmented and digital instruments)
  • Audio diagnosis (non-invasive medical diagnosis through capture and analysis of biological sounds)

Through integration with other USP and external research groups the center can also act in the following lines:

  • High definition audio (HD Audio)
  • Algorithmic composition
  • MIR (music information retrieval and sound descriptors)
  • Auditory systems modeling
