Image Coding

Requirements:

• Storage: coding must be reversible for exact reconstruction of image (usually).

• Transmission: Only reasonable fidelity expected -

coding may be irreversible (minimum distortion).

• Feature extraction: Codes need only help in identification or classification of various types of images -

image recovery not required.

Difficulties:

• Reversible codes can compress only ~ 2: 1;

• Definition of fidelity or distortion measures;

• Feature-space dimensionality.
