Differentiation leads to

• removal of constant values in the direction of the operation;

• extraction of edges in the orthogonal direction;

• andremoval of the average intensity (DC component).

Roberts gradient uses cross-differences

This operator computes diagonal edge gradients.The advantage of this operator is that the resulting image pixel values may be written in the same array as the input image (in situ computations).
